Lighting a Beacon
As part of this celebration we will be creating in Wellington Square South Ayrshire’s “Field of Heroes”. This is an art installation made-up of 108 giant silhouettes of forces personnel each one of which we will link by QR codes to individuals from South Ayrshire who lost their lives in the Second World War. The stories of these individuals will be narrated by young people from local youth groups and hosted on YouTube. The installation will be available to view between 1st and 10th of May. Leading up to the 1st of May there will be a number of pop-up roadshows bringing the figures and their stories to other towns in the county.
On VE Day itself there will be a celebration event in the town hall. At the end of this event there will be a parade from the town hall to Wellington Square where a short ceremony of remembrance will be held at the war memorial. This will then link to a lighting of beacons across South Ayrshire which will be linking into a UK wide beacon chain and celebration and commemoration event.
