Proclamation
Come along and experience the end of the war in Europe in 1945 with a 90-minute
guided walk through Glasgow City centre. From the night that the ‘blackout died’ on 23 April to the official closing of Glasgow’s air raid shelters on the 14th May. Stories and facts gathered about the buildings, streets, squares and people will transport you back in time to the Spring of 1945, 80 years ago.
Featured stories (with many more) include: reaction in Glasgow to Germany’s
capitulation and Hitler’s suicide, Glasgow’s ‘V’ Day rehearsal, tension and anticipation as the city waited for the ‘proclamation day’ when the holiday could begin, ‘Victory’ day when one tenth of Glasgow celebrated in the ‘Square’, the night the toilet doors and clothes poles burned! Open, shut and carry on as normal: public holiday arrangements for food, drink, travel and retail , the Victory thanksgiving service and cleaning up after V.E. Day.
Nine free 90 minute walks from 8-10th May (capacity for each walk 10), delivered by Dr. Kevin Morrison based on his research into how city infrastructures function in wartime.
