Lighting a Beacon
On Thursday 8th May we will join the nation in a shared moment of celebration to mark the 80th Anniversary of VEDay which, of course, heralded the end of World War II.
We will remember the sacrifices, particularly of the town’s sons and daughters, and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy today because of them.
In a joint event with our friends at Royal British Legion, Whitchurch, and joined by local veterans, we will light a VE Day Beacon at the War Memorial at 9.30pm, timed to coordinate with similar activity throughout the country . The Mayor of Whitchurch will also read the specially-written VE Day Proclamation and the Rector of St Alkmund’s will join us in the short, simple ceremony, which is scheduled to commence at 9pm.
Space within the War Memorial grounds is limited, but you are welcome to join us to give your thanks and pay your respects … the VE Day Beacon will remain in place until 10.30pm to allow time for this (similar to other national arrangements).
